A  tiny spark is all  you need

The Komodo dragon(The Daily Post discover challenge – Animal)

Weekly Discover Challenge

Human beings have a common phobia of sorts for reptiles in general . Perhaps it is something to do with their general appearance , that is, to be honest, rather creepy, fear inducing or even repulsive at times, no offence meant (!!). Or may be it is the way they drag their weight around ,  quite literally (!) on their short podgy limbs; or sometimes the lack of it, that makes them less appealing to us humans. The myths and rumors surrounding them and their poisonous fangs, might just add to the nature of this fear or hatred as you may deem acceptable.

The Komodo dragon is one such fear inducing reptile that one only sees in one’s worse nightmares, as that four legged monster chasing you while your body stays paralyzed and incapable to respond.

My opinion on this creature was not very different… well..until I happened to see one for real here in Indonesia. Komodo dragons or Komodo monitor is a large species of lizard native to the islands of Indonesia. And so it does not come as a surprise that on one of our recent visits to a tourist  attraction  called  Taman Mini here in Indonesia,  we had the good fortune of encountering a Komodo Dragon for real.

Well, it was not out in the open, and no I did not touch it . It was within the confines of a large enclosure . One solitary dragon, lazing under the afternoon sun.

As I stood there watching this gigantic lizard with awe, all my repulsion melted away… and I saw it as  beautiful as it really was…

Just as I was about to turn away giving up any hope of making it leave it’s cozy spot, it stirred. And there it was slowly but steadily trudging past the small ravine and making it’s way to me, the glass shield being the only barrier between us. It watched me with the same curiosity with which I gazed at him. And then it seemed I had passed his test, for he decided to lie down  on the grass  besides me as I sat on the other side of the glass barrier,   my fingers trying to reach out…

At that moment I did not see a carnivore that feeds on other birds and animals, or one that is known to attack human beings at times. I just saw a calm, gentle creature that wanted to be loved or perhaps was aching for some company…

Or as most people would say it, it was the glass that made all the difference !

Hello from Indonesia

Hey all my dearies…

First of all I owe you all a big big apology for having kept away from the blogosphere for a really long time , almost an year, well, with an exception of a random poem here and there. The last one year has been one roller coaster ride and that involved lots and lots of travelling and socializing !

Well, the last time I posted I had told you about our move to the southern part of India and now believe it or not, I am writing this post from a place far away from India, Jakarta, Indonesia….

Yes, we have just moved into Jakarta a month back for an official course of my better half, who as most of you already know is in the army.

Well, so we will be in this part of the world for some time now and so I thought this is the best opportunity to get back to what I love – blogging. Being in a new place, one is exposed to so many different experiences, a whole new culture, language and food. So I thought I should take to sharing my pictures and experiences of this place with all my sincere followers and blogger friends who have patiently continued to follow me despite my obvious absence from the blogging scene.

In fact, last December we had traveled to South Africa and I had so many pictures to share with you all but my busy schedule as an army wife prevented me from doing so.

Anyway I thank all my friends for staying with me and all my new followers too for their support.I hope to be more consistent with my  blogging now that I have a little more time on my hands. Cannot wait to hear from you all.

Hope you enjoy the slideshow of a few random pictures taken here in Jakarta…

till then

warm regards

sweety

Words

The words pierced the heart

like  the cold edge of a dagger

numbing at first

But unbearable in the next

And as the depth of their harshness

Begin to sink in

Slowly but painfully

No effort could submerge the agony

it caused, when the heart erupted

like a monstrous fire breathing volcano

While the eyes released the flood of tears

to diffuse the fire it fumed..

I posted this poem two days back but I guess it was never on the reader…Don’t know what went wrong…so re-blogging it for all my friends and followers 🙂

The 'Pen'lightenment Of The Soul

IMG_4962

In times of despair

When darkness clouds my mind

Filling it with hopeless fear

A flicker of light I find

 In moments of solitude

When bitterness overwhelms my heart

Enslaving my grit and fortitude

A   prayer I say makes my loneliness depart

In times of  fame and success galore

When my heart swells with pride

Yet my greedy self yearns for more

‘Stop’ says a voice somewhere deep inside

In times of love and happiness

when my haughty mind begins to ignore

my beautiful friends and loved ones

A nightmare reminds me of the solitude before

You have been in my journey

You have seen me through

You have guided me sternly

Yet I never saw you !

You were the light that I saw

You were the prayer that I said

You were the voice  shouting no

You were the nightmare  in  my bed

You led me to…

Women’s day everyday ….

Today is the International Women’s day or so they say . Leaves me a little perplexed . Does that mean , the other days don’t belong to us , women or is it just a consolation prize for the otherwise forgotten ‘greatness’ of  women !

I am a woman , and equally , if not any more , sane as my male counterpart , and I think celebrating your existence should be an everyday affair . The social media today , is overflowing with status messages and dedications to this lovely species , called ‘Women’ , telling us about their super powers ,  elevating them to the status of a goddess , describing in varied detail , the hardships faced by them , respecting the women in our family and so on .

Open your facebook or twitter account tomorrow , and these would have disappeared without a sign , ‘poof’ ! ,  back into the same graves , from which they had arisen , much  like ‘zombies’  , only twenty four hours ago .

Today , each one of us think that out social and moral responsibility begins and ends with a social media status (Guilty as charged ! )

What one needs to think is that a ‘Woman’ , is a human being , with slightly different functions ( I am referring to the physical aspects , the social functions are of course , man made !  ) .  We do not celebrate a ‘Man’s day’ (not that I know of  !) , then why this particular bias towards  women ?

Agreed a woman does many things worth a (or perhaps a zillion ! ) mention (s) , but don’t men have their share of duties to fulfill …?

Are we as women , any less human , or inferior to the men , that we require such special days and special dedications ? Women are strong , perhaps , mentally even stronger than men . Such special days , according to me , only go to belittle their hard work and position as an active member of society .

A woman’s contribution to society , just like the men’s   can not   , be  packed into  a single day of the year . That will just not be enough . She deserves love , respect , appreciation and acknowledgement , round the clock , through out the year !

No amount of protests and movements in favor of women emancipation , will work , if the total ‘mind set’ does not change .  Women are not special , perhaps a little physically fragile , but that doesn’t make them the ‘Weaker section of society’ .

In fact if this whole outlook towards women , and the way they are looked at by the society has to change , it has to start from a woman itself ; a mother , who fails to discriminate her children right from their toddler years , who teaches her sons to respect women , in the family and outside , and her daughter to blossom into a real woman , capable of standing her ground , if the need arises.

Don’t wait for others to set examples . Set your own .

As a woman , you need to love and respect yourself , for others to do the same . Be beautiful , on the outside and the inside . Let’s make it our day , everyday  . And this goes for the men folk too . The love and regard is mutual ; our men need some appreciation as well !

Life should a celebration of humanity , every hour of the day , and every day of an year .

We are the masters of our own destiny !

A love letter from a friend :)

Alright  I think this has been the longest I have been away from my blog , and I would have continued the break had it not been this one little surprise that awaited me when I got back home after a packed schedule , filled with travel , fun and family times .

Today is my daughter’s 4th birthday and hence a day filled with surprises for her . But the celebrations this year were kick started with a visit to a home for old , mentally challenged , orphans and even cancer patients . But I shall write an elaborate post about that visit soon , in another post , as and when I shall find time , now that my better half is here !

But today’s post is not about my daughter or her surprises , it is about a surprise I received as soon as I stepped foot into my home . A letter , from a sweet blogger friend , Nisha of  , A wandering story teller , that has made my already special valentine’s even more special .

The 'special' letter from an extremely thoughtful blogger friend :) I loved the care with which it was written ,and tied together using the blue ribbons ! Speaks volumes about the writer :D
The ‘special’ letter from an extremely thoughtful blogger friend 🙂 I loved the care with which it was written , and tied together using the blue ribbons ! Speaks volumes about the writer 😀

It was with great difficulty that A wandering story teller managed  write and  post them and while I was still travelling I did get an intimation from her for the fact that the letter will probably have to be collected from a certain point…

But so much was happening in my life since then , including a very special valentine holiday along with my husband and daughter , that somehow , the letter thing slipped my mind completely , which is why when I saw it waiting for me on my table (where my father had left it for me ) , I was surprised and excited !

But it was the words in the letter that truly made my  day .

Nisha , I thank you from the bottom of my heart for this wonderful gesture , and that too for a complete stranger ! What you wrote in there , brought tears to my heart and motivated me to write more and stay focused ! But let me tell you , army life isn’t all about separations ! We have peace postings too …so it is not a bad idea to get hitched to an army guy 😛

In this present world , where everyone is in a tearing hurry to go about their work , with no time left for even close relatives and family , this young girl has proved that there is still some love left in the world . Her selfless act of going through this whole ordeal just to see a few smiling faces , will definitely take her a long way in life !

I do have the urge to write an equally long , sweet letter addressed to you as well , but I have my hands full right now , although I will certainly try and do it , as and when possible !

Thank you so much , you did not just bring a smile , you brought out tears of joy and loads of laughter too !!!

Cheers…may you keep spreading more joy and smiles in this world through your kind gestures …

Hope you had a great Valentine’s day too 😀

Handwritten……

Alright so this is in response to the Handwriting challenge by Jithin of PhoTrablogger .

Well we do live today in a world where the traditional handwriting has taken a backseat in favor of the typed Alphabet . But I have always been a conservative , when it comes to writing .

Although ,a few  of my poems have never seen a paper before they got published here on my blog , most of them have ! In fact all my short stories have been given birth by my loyal pen and have found their way in my diary …. ‘Penning down’ , is an important thing for me to express my thoughts and feelings ..

Whenever I write a story , I go with the flow of my thoughts..sometimes I have had to tear away pages of my diary if the work hasn’t been up to my satisfaction and sometimes they are filled with lots of scribbles , strikes and scribbles …And apart from the first few lines of my short story , the rest of it is one dirty mess …

So here is a picture I thought of finally putting up in response to this challenge , a page from my diary and the beginning of my new short story…although the final version may still end up with alterations. The story is still in the process of being written…But this can be a ‘Teaser’ of sorts ! (so much for my self promotion 😛 ) :

So when was the last time you wrote down something on paper …?
